Icon design

I think designing icons is a discipline on its own. It's an aspect of design that is often a bit underrated in my opinion. When people look at a design they do not always see the little details and the amount of work that went into this part. Icons are often part of the final process, in other words the finishing touches to a design.

Icons are a important part of the process

At time icons have to carry out an important mission. In some case they do the heavy lifting in a design. Think about buttons for an application for example. The icon needs to tell the user what will happen when the button is clicked.

A series of icons used in different projects

Icons never have been on the forefront here so I thought why not showcase some of the icons that I've designed lately. I can't count the amount of different icons for different projects so far, but here is a list of a few that I want to share with you:

Icons of all kinds

Sometimes icons are like complete illustrations and sometimes they are so tiny that they only consist of a few pixels. They are created pixel by pixel using the Pencil tool in Photoshop. The more illustrative ones are created in Illustrator. Though I must say I often combine both apps these days: start in Illustrator with the basics, place the shapes in Photoshop either as Shape layers or Smart Objects and finish things off in Photoshop.

Some of the icons shown here never saw the daylight

I think I could write an article or 2 on projects that never saw the daylight or designs that didn't make it for some reason. Here are the icons of a few:

You have such a variety of styles. These were great to see. I especially like the ones that never got used! LOL! I love the little, colorful people in that section and the truck, especially.

Now, I just have to find a trucking or shipping company that needs a website. ;)

Love your icon designs. They are so fresh and clean and convey their meanings succinctly. Keep up the great work.

Great icons! I’d recommend putting some lines over the icons like at iconfactory to prevent them being stolen.

I’d second the protecting lines idea as these are a great varied set of icons.

I’m always amazed by the skill of people in creating these little works of art.

It’s like a buffet filled with all kinds of small hors d’ oeuvres, waiting to nommed! I have a weakness for icons… Beautiful work!!

Thanks for the compliments! About the striking through, I thought about it and tried it out, but it just ruins the viewing. I figured if somebody is stupid enough to steal, they will be caught anyway, as I have many people doing police work for me. The truth is out there ;)

Thank you for the very nice compliment. Coming from you, this means a lot to me since you are a talented (icon) designer yourself ;)

I love all of the work although the simple one color icons really stand out to me. The Gourmates set gets the message across in a smart and concise way. Thanks.

Great flare for design in your icons and style, really like the simplicity of some and the detail of the others, good going ;)
